Why CPOE? • Improved patient safety through decreased medication errors • Provides latest evidence-based standards • Better access to patient information for all caregivers • Decrease follow up calls regarding legibility of orders • Can reduce length of stay & total hospital cost • Improved quality outcomes

  4. Implementation of CPOE on Columbia Campuses • When? - Phased rollouts First Rollout mid May Second rollout August Third rollout early 2011 • Where? - First Rollout - L&D, OB/GYN, Psych units - Second rollout- Med/Surg units - Third rollout -TBD

  5. Teams for Rollout • Teams have been formed to assist with each CPOE rollout • The teams include: - Physicians - Expert Nursing Clinicians from the areas - CQI - Information Technology - Nursing Informatics • Teams will develop and/or review orders-based powerplans (electronic orders)

  6. CPOE Expectation Some providers will be entering the orders into the computer. Others will continue the current paper process for patient orders Verbal and telephone orders will remain current process. Orders transcribed by a unit secretary will stay current state. The nurse still has to sign these orders off on paper.

  7. CPOE and Unit Secretaries Continually monitor the Patient Access List (PAL) for new orders entered electronically Review electronic orders and take action as appropriate Notify nurse of new orders with emphasis on STAT orders Continue current process with orders written on paper
