TISSUE PAPER HOT AIR BALLOON Joshua Seo / 3-13-13 / Physics / Period:5
Introduction • Hot air balloon is to travel through the air in a basket suspended below a large bag of heated air. The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. Hot air balloons that can be propelled through the air rather than just being pushed along by the wind are known as airships.
Objectives and Standard • Learning Objectives • 1 - differentiate heat from temperature. • 2 - Give the difference between heat and work • 3 - Defind: a) specific heat b) heat capacity c) head of vaporization d) heat of fusion • Standard • 3a – Heat flow and work are two forms of energy transfer between systems
Problem and Hypothesis • How would the hot air balloon be able to launch up to the air the highest ? • If you make the inside of the balloon have more space, the hot air balloon will be able to launch up to the air the highest.
Materials • 3 sheets of tissue • Paper • 1 glue stick • Pair of scissors • Ruler • Stop watch
Plan and Design • I tried to make my hot air balloon to a shape of a oval. That way there would be more space for the hot air inside the balloon.
Procedures • Cut tissue papers in to 8 parts • Glue tissue papers to form balloon shape • Inside out • Make skirt • Make two-layers of circle (for the tip)
Conclusion • Through this project, I was able to observe that Hot air balloon rises more if the inside has more space for the hot air. Since hot air goes up, and cold air goes down, If there is more hot air inside, then faster the hot air balloon will rise because there is more hot air trying to go up.
Summary and Reflection • Through this project, I was able to find out how the hot air balloons work. Hot air rises and cold air goes down, this is pretty much how the hot air balloon works !
Physics of Hot Air Balloon • The basis of how the balloon works is that warmer air rises in cooler air. This is because hot air is lighter than cool air as it has less mass per unit of volume. Mass can be defined by the measure of how much matter something contains
Safety Lab Rules • Watch your hands when using hair blower • Wear gloves when using hair blower • Watch your fingers when cutting papers
