History of the Hot Air Balloon • In 1783, Pilatre De Rozier launched the “Aerostat Reveillon” holding a sheep, a duck, and a rooster • It stayed in the air for 15 minutes • In 1783, 2 months later, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier (French brothers) made the first hot air balloon for man. It lasted 20 minutes before falling
More History • In 1785, Jean Pierre Blanchard (French Balloonist) and John Jefferies (American co-pilot) were the first people who flew across the English Channel. • In 1793, Jean Pierre Blanchard became the first person to fly in North America • George Washington was actually there when the balloon floated into the air
Even More History • In 1932, Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard set the new altitude record of 52,498 ft by floating to the stratosphere ( he was also the first to go there) • In 1935, a gas helium hot air balloon model reached 72,395 ft setting a new altitude record • Finally, in 1960 Captain Joe Kittinger set an altitude record of 102,000 ft high (he parachuted off the balloon)
Concepts of the Balloon • Density- the property of matter that is the mass to volume ratio • Temperature-the measure of the hotness or coldness of something • Pressure-force against an object
How The Balloon Uses Them • Density-In order for the balloon to float, the density inside must be less than the density outside • Temperature-Hot air rises and cold air settles. Since the hot air is on the inside, it will push the balloon upward. • Pressure- The pressure of the balloon shows how much air is measured by PSI(Pounds/In2)
How The Balloon Works • Hot air is less dense than cold air so when hot air enters a hot air balloon it will carry the balloon upwards because warm air rises in cold air.
Materials Used • 2 plastic, light dry cleaning bags • Heat source • Scissors • Tape • 3-4 straws • Cotton Balls

Beginning Step • The first thing you must do is take 2 light dry cleaning bags and put them next to each other. You do this so you can plan how to cut and tape them together. Note: You must plan before you do anything so you don’t make any mistakes!!
Step 2 • The second thing we did was we had to cut the two bags at the edges. So, we ended up with two big sheets of plastic bags not closed at all
Step 3 • We then took the two cut plastic bags and taped one side from each balloon together to get an even bigger piece of plastic in a cylinder.
Step 4 • We then took the last two long sides not taped and tape them together. We had a cylinder with an opening at the top and one at the bottom.
Step 5 • Next, we had to tape the top so it could start to take form as a hot air balloon. We folded the top in a little bit, and then taped it. We were finally getting closer to finishing our hot air balloon.
Step 6 • After taping the top, we took the straws and connected them all together making a crooked circle.
Step 7 • Then we took the bottom of the balloon which is not taped and scrunch it around the straw circle. By doing this some pieces of the balloon will not be taped to the straws at first.
Step 8 • We folded the pieces sticking out so that the whole bottom was taped. Now the only opening on the whole balloon is the one in the straw circle.
Step 9 • Now we must make sure there are no holes in the balloon. What we did was put the opening at the bottom on the AC that was letting air out. When the balloon was filled with air we noticed that there were a couple holes and taped them quickly.
Step 10 • We are know fully finished with our hot air balloon and are excited to launch it!!
Step 11 • While the balloon was being constructed, the PowerPoint to present it was being made.
