  1. Short Description Quiz Included Tornadoes!

  2. Definition and Description • A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus cloud and the surface of the earth. • Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris. • Most tornadoes have wind speeds of 110 mph or less, are approximately 250 feet, and travel a few miles before dissipating. • Some attain wind speeds of more than 300 stretch more than a mile across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles![

  3. Question #1- Fill in the Blank A tornado extends from a _____ cloud and extends to the surface of the earth. a. cirrus b. cumulonimbus c. cumulus d. stratus

  4. Types of Tornadoes • Multiple Vertex: A tornado where two or more cortexes rotate around a common center. • Satelitte: a weaker tornado that forms and circulates around a larger tornado • Waterspout: a tornado that forms over water • Landspout: a weaker tornado with a small funnel cloud and short lifespan.

  5. Question #2- Multiple Choice Which kind of tornado forms over water? a. Landspout b. Multiple Vertex c. Satellite d. Waterspout

  6. How a Tornado is Measured The Enhanced Fujita Scale • EFO-EF5 is the rating scale (5 being most extreme). • Most tornadoes in the U.S. are between an EF1 and EF2. • Also measured by the TORO scale, T1-T11 (T11 being the most extreme).

  7. Life cycle of a Tornado • Supercell relationship: a mesocylone, an area of rotation, is present • Formation: funnel appears to descend from base • Maturity: continues growing until reaches maturity stage • Demise: the air supply is eventually cut off and the tornado disapates Finish
