  1. Making Making a a Gem Out Of Gem Out Of a a Gem: Faceting Gemstones Gemstones Gem: Faceting Gemstones are after all stones in variegated colors unearthed from underneath the earth surface. When it is unearthed, the stones do not at all look like the gemstones that we are used to see in the jewelries or the ones that we find in the shops. There exists a very interesting process using which the otherwise ordinary colored stones get the desired shape. Moreover, this process also lends the gems the luster and shine that is normally associated to a gemstone. Are you wondering what this process which produces the very precious gems called? The process is known as Faceting Gemstones. To be more precise, Faceting Gemstones is not a singular process. It is a collection of a number of procedures; each procedure is unique in its own way and is of immense significance. It is but obvious that you are eager to know about the various processes involved. Here follows a short but informative glimpse into the procedures: Using the dop stick: The first step before commencing the faceting process is to fix the gemstone on the dop stick. The dop stick is actually a cylindrical stick made of brass with wax on its head. This wax is melted slightly using an alcohol lamp and the stone is placed on the wax with the help of Super glue or cyanocrylate. It is very important to place the stone exactly at the center of the stick which would then be mounted on the faceting machine. This process is called dopping.

  2. The form before the form: pre-form: In this process, the stone is mounted on a pavilion where using coarse grit discs the stone is given a rough shape. A significant amount of extra weight is reduced and the stone gets a predictable weight. The masterstroke: the final facets are made on the stone following the design. This stage can be considered as providing the masterstrokes where the final facets are made. In the process, polysynthetic twining or minute fractures which were previously invisible might appear. At such a juncture, one needs to decide whether further weight reduction is required or one would stick to the original pattern. Adding the luster: This is the stage when the stone is polished. Preliminarily, only a few facets are polished. Depending on the observation whether the desired shine is achieved, further polishing is done.

  3. Dismounting: So far, it must be noted, that only one face of the stone has been polished. Now it is time to polish the other surface or the crown, which was mounted on the dop stick. The original dop is heated slightly to release the stone which is then mounted following the same process on another dop stick placed exactly coaxially to the original dop stick. Using the same steps, the crown is also faceted. The finishing: The dop is then heated to release the stone which has been polished and has by now acquired the desired shape. A gem is thus created out of a rough and crude stone!
