Purpose • What are you learning? About expository writing • Why are you learning this? To benefit from understanding the varying types of writing styles you can use for academic and workplace activities.
Grammar Complex Sentence Review A complex sentence contains at least one main (independent) clause and one subordinate (dependent) clause: • Examples: • Time runs quickly when a deadline is near. • Since there was no food, he was hungry. • After I left, my friend came over. The clause is subordinate if it does not express a complete thought on its own. The words 'when’, ‘after’, and 'since' are subordinating conjunctions. Think of a complex sentence as a family. Although the children contribute to the family, they cannot survive on their own without the base of the family--the parents.
Crafting the Lesson An expository writing is informs, explains, describes how to, and tells what happened. Look at the Writing Rubric. Let’s review each part of it. Please ask questions!!
Composing Meaning • Take out your introductory paragraph, completed graphic organizer, and questions. • Begin writing your newspaper article. • When you finish, use the rubric to score you own writing. • Edit and revise your article if needed. PLEASE DO YOUR PERSONAL BEST!!
