The End of the War. After the battle of Cowpens, Cornwallis and his troops began leaving SC for NC. His goal was to link up with General Clinton in New York City and mount an offensive on American forces in the Middle Colonies .

Cornwallis was forced to surrender. A band played the tune “The World Turned Upside Down” as more than 7000 British laid down their arms on October 19, 1781.

Skirmishes still occurred after the surrender, it would be another 15 months before the last British troops left South Carolina on December 14, 1782. British troops took with them hundreds of loyalists, even more slaves, and much gold and silver as they left Charles Town.
Even though America won the war, Great Britain still had to recognize the US was free and independent.
A group including Henry Laurens (who had been President of the Continental Congress) was sent to Paris as negotiators for a peace treaty with Great Britain under the Articles of Confederation.
Articles of Confederation had finally been approved by all the colonies in March 1781 and became the “rule book” used as our first official form of national government for the new United States SC had approved the Articles quickly but other states hesitated until a compromise was reached over the ownership of western lands Articles of Confederation government was modeled on the Continental Congress with one vote for each state.
America wanted a peace treaty that: • recognized American independence, • established its western boundary at the Mississippi River, and • gave Canada to the US. Treaty of Paris "officially" ends the war
