Nobles such as Bruce and Balliol wanted to become King so did not want her to rule – worry that they would start a civil war in attempt to gain throne. She was female! It was believed that women could not lead an army into battle. 3. She would need a husband! Choosing a Scottish noble could lead to civil war as nobles would be jealous of the one chosen. If she married a foreign Prince his country may control Scotland. 2. She was too young to rule! She may die before reaching 18. She would need guardians to rule on her behalf… people worried this would lead to disputes.
The Scone Parliament, 1286 Important Nobles met at Scone and agreed: 1. Margaret, Maid of Norway would be their Queen 2. To elect 6 Guardians to govern Scotland till Margaret was old enough Scone 3. To keep peace in Scotland
