  1. THERMOCHEMICAL CONVERSION OF SOLID FUELS – Processes of pyrolysis, gasification and combustionof biomass an wastes. WORKGROUP 2 Pyrolysis for solid products WORKGROUP leader Aleksander Sobolewski Ph.D.

  2. WG2 - Actions during the first year 10-11.07.2003 Visit in Deutsche Montan TechnologieGmbH (DMT), Germany • DMT – afully commercial organization, does not have extra money for additional research program. The cooperation was supposed to be closely connected with current research or service tasks. • Research within the framework of internships was supposed to concentrate on thermal utilizationof wasteplastics or on sewage sludge treatment. • The scope of technical cooperation range should have been conducted in “Modern Fuels Unit”. 15-16.07.2003 Visit in Centre de Pyrolyse de Marienau(CPM), France • CPM - a fully commercial organization, does not have extra money for additional research program. The cooperation is supposed to be closely connected with current research resulting in commercial product. • CPM proposed participation of its individual researchers in conferences and seminars planned in the project and suggested the scope of their presentations. • Topics for bilateral cooperation within the framework of young researcher internship in CPM has been selected.

  3. WG2 - Actions during the first year 18 -22.05.2003 Visit of Prof. A. Mastral (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Spain) in Poland • The visit included working meetings in IChPW and participation in the conference “Combustion and Gasification of Biomass and Wastes” in Wisła. The following aspects of cooperation were discussed: • Thermal processing (pyrolysis) of rubber waste, especially the problem of distribution of sulphur andzinccompoundsduring its thermal transformation, will be the main field of cooperation between IChPWandCSIC. • Cooperation in this field should bring preparation of common application proposals for Projects within6FP. 9-11.06.2003 Visit in Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas(CSIC), Spain • The scope of technical research was negotiated. The research will concentrate on pyrolysis of rubber waste. Pyrolysis tests in both fixed bed (8 tests in IChPW) and fluidized bed (4 tests in CSIC) were suggested.Products’ (mainly solids) properties analysis will be conducted in laboratories of both research centres. • The date of Mr. Sławomir Stelmach’s arrival for a three-month scientific internship at CSIC was discussed. CSIC suggested the internship period: March-May 2004. • The Spanish centre proposed participation of its researchers in conferences and seminars planned in theproject. The scope of their presentation is described and will be approved in the form of Technical Annex.

  4. Results Co-operation agreements: CSICCPM DMT Date of signing:June 10th September 4th? Technical Annexesto co-operation agreements concern: 2003 2003 • participation in 2 conferences • participation in 2 seminars • scientific internships for 2 young researchers • 7 professional meetings • 1 training cours

  5. WG2 - Research works Title:Sewage sludge co-pyrolysis with coal blends (1) The aim: Safe utilization of sewage sludge without deteriation of coke quality and with respectation of all legislative aspects Experimental results: Legend: coal – coking blend included 4% of coke dust ss – municipal sewage sludge CSR – coke strength after reaction (Nippon Steel Test) CRI – cokereactivity index (Nippon Steel Test)

  6. Coke Plant Wastewater Plant WG2 - Research works Title:Sewage sludge co-pyrolysis with coal blends (2) Industrial implementation: Partners: • PHS S.A. – T.Sendzimira Steel Works, Coking Plant – Cracow, Poland • Municipal Company of Water Supply and Sewerage System, Cracow, Poland

  7. pyrolysis 22% Al WG2 - Research works Title:Waste beverage cartons pyrolysis Problem:30.000 t/y of waste beverage cartons in Poland The aim:Possibilities of Al recycling Preliminary results: Thermogravimetric analysisof waste beverage cartons decomposition Tetra-Pak / Combiblock composition: - polyethylene: ca. 20% - paper: ca. 75% - aluminium: ca. 5% Products of pyrolysis:- gas: ca. 40% - solid: ca. 35% (78%-char, 22%-Al)- liquid: ca. 25%

  8. WG2 - Research works Title:Sewage sludge pyrolysis for cheap adsorbents production The aim: Utilization of sewage sludge to obtain products for wastewater and flue gases adsorptive cleaning The idea: Selected results:flue gas cleaning NOx reduction SO2 removal

  9. Evaluation New joint research project in 6th Framework Programme Title of Project: Optimisation of thermo-chemical processes for hydrogen obtaining from bio-sources Acronym:BIHYDRO Proposal:Autumn, 2004, Target Action: 6.1.3.2.3 – New and advanced concepts in renewable energy technologies (biomass) Consortium:14 participants from Spain (4), Poland (1), Sweden (1), Netherlands (1), Greece (2), Austria (2), Norway (1),UK(1) and Italy (1) Coordination:Dr Ana M. Mastral, CSIC (Spain) Role of IChPW: - thermogravimetric analysis of raw materials - biomass and wastes fixed bed pyrolysis - production of desired quantity of oil fraction for testing - cleaning of pyrolysis gas by plasma technology Preliminary meeting of participants:March 8th, 2004, Brussels
