Coverage Analyzer Tool for Historical Coverage Characterization and National Data Acquisitions

The Coverage Analyzer tool automates the archival search process and provides users with historical coverage information for any location, time period, and mission. It can be used to view tabular results of total acquisitions, select data based on acquisitions and cloud percentage, and view bar charts of total vs. cloudy coverage. This tool aims to support GFOI Element #2 requirements and can potentially link to other mission archives like ESA-Sentinels, INPE-CBERS, Radarsat-2, RapidEye, SPOT, ALOS, TerraSAR, and SAOCOM.

  1. GFOI Element #2Historical Coverage Characterization and National Data Acquisitions Brian Killough (NASA, SEO)Paul Kessler, Shaun Deacon,Brian Williams, Sanjay Gowda and Kim Keith September 4-6, 2013 SDCG-4 Meeting Pasadena, CA, USA

  2. SEO Support to GFOI – Element #2 • What tools will the SEO develop to support GFOI Element 2 – Historical Coverage Characterization and National Data Acquisitions? • The COVE team is developing a new tool (spin off from COVE) called the “Coverage Analyzer”. This tool will automate the archival search process and allow users to view historical coverage for any location, time period and mission. • To date, we have only utilized the Landsat archive. We intend to work with other Agencies to develop potential links to their archives ... ESA-Sentinels, INPE-CBERS, Radarsat-2, RapidEye, SPOT, ALOS, TerraSAR, and SAOCOM missions. This will be a topic of discussion at WGISS in 2 weeks.

  3. Coverage Analyzer - Prototype Select a Mission/Instrument + Date Range (past)Select a Region (or define)Define a cloud threshold (Landsat only)View tabular results of total acquisitions

  4. Coverage Analyzer – Outputs View data in graphical formSelect data (Acquisitions, Cloud%)View bar charts of Total vs. Cloudy

  5. Coverage Analyzer Thoughts • How can the Coverage Analyzer Tool best support GFOI and the Element-2 requirements? • Besides Landsat, what other missions should be targeted for linking to historical data? These other missions may alter the output plans since Landsat includes cloud information with their archive data. • What output is needed?Tabular data by Path-Row for download?Bar charts to show total acquisitions vs. cloud threshold?Colored KML files for Google Earth or COVE?User-defined color ranges or user-defined regions?
