Adventure in Family History • Castelvetrano • Campobello di Mazara • Mazara del Vallo • Selinute
After Breakfast • We met Demitri, our driver who spoke no English. John Lena could speak more Italian than anyone else in the group of eight, so he was the official spokesperson – he did a commendable job. • It was a quick trip to Castelvetrano on the express highway. The express highway system in Sicily makes travel around the island quick and easy.
Next stop: Campobello di Mazara Flowers and olive trees behind Joe.
Main street in front of St. John the Baptist Church Much smaller town than Castelvetrano or Mazara del Vallo
John Lena & the priest from St. John the Baptist. • The priest is an author of a book on the history of the town/church. • They found John & Vince’s grandmother’s baptismal record. • The priest knew about the Gateway Arch and St. Ambrose Parish.
The Naumann family in the town where Joe’s grandfather was born The back of the duomo is at the end of the street.
We have a niece named Annalise Except for coffee bars and tobacco shops, all businesses were closed.
Shoreline piazza east of duomo: Roman ruins and modern sculpture
Lunch • We stop looking for a restaurant that’s open. • We do find a coffee bar/pastry shop still open (they were about to close). • We have coffee, calzone, and cannoli for lunch – excellent all the way around. • We decide to stop at Selinute, near Castelvetrano on the way back to Mondello Bay
Walking to the first temple This was the most nearly complete of the three temples at this site, and the smallest.
A Fantastic Day • This was truly the highlight of the trip. • We couldn’t have shared it with a more congenial family than the Lenas. • We return to the Mondello Bay Palace for the best hotel meal so far (only one more to go). • Tomorrow, Jodi, Ginny’s roommate, will take a side trip to her ancestral hometown with our driver, Demitri.
