In 1209 provençal poets were banished from France and arrived in Sicily where they were received by Frederic II in his court in Palermo.
From the union of italian writers and provençal poets the “ Sicilian Poetry School” was born: the most important centre of culture during the XIII century in Italy.
The principal theme of its literary production was Love, seen as a sort of gentle service towards women. Woman was considered a perfect and unreal character.
The most important poets of sicilian school poetry were: Jacopo da Lentini who invented the sonnet, Frederic II himself, Piero delle Vigne and Frederic’s sons Renzo and Manfredi.
The provençal poets performed their works playing an instrument while the sicilians didn’t.
