Today is February 3, 2015 Topic: Chemical Reactions Lesson Objectives: SWBAT 2.2.2 Analyze evidence of chemical change 2.2.3 Analyze the law of conservation of matter and how it applies to various types of chemical equations Essential Question: 2.2 Analyze chemical reactions in terms of quantities, product formation, and energy.
Chemical Reactions (p.17) • This is the language to describe a • Chemical Reaction! 1
Chemical Reactions (p.17) • Coefficients are used for balancing reactions. The subscripts DO NOT CHANGE when balancing reactions 1
Balancing reactions (p17) • The law of conservation of mass says that we can not create mass nor destroy mass. • Atoms have mass. • We can not create atoms, nor destroy atoms • Remember: Every atom that goes into a reaction must come out!!!
Balancing reactions (p17) Steps: • 1. Write element list underneath arrow. • 2. Take atom inventory on each side of arrow • 3. Use multipliers (coefficients) to balance elements. • Balance H second to last and O last. If you struggle to balance and are left with ONLY O, double all your coefficients.
Balancing reactions (p17) • ____ H2 + ____ O2 ____ H2O • 2 H 2 • 2 O 1 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
Balancing reactions (p17) • ____ H2 + ____ O2 ____ H2O • 2 H 2 • 2 O 1 x2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
Balancing reactions (p17) • ____ H2 + ____ O2 _2__ H2O • 2 H 2 • 2 O 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!
Balancing reactions (p17) • ____ H2 + ____ O2 _2__ H2O • 2 H 2 x2 = 4 • 2 O 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!
Balancing reactions (p17) • ____ H2 + ____ O2 _2__ H2O • 2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4 • 2 O 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!
Balancing reactions (p17) • __2_ H2 + ____ O2 _2__ H2O • 4=2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4 • 2 O 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!
Balancing reactions (p17) • __2_ H2 + __1_ O2 _2__ H2O • 4=2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4 • 2=1x 2 O 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!
Balancing reactions (p17) • ___ H2 + ____ N2 ___ H3N • 2 H 3 • 2 N 1 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
Balancing reactions (p17) • ___ H2 + ____ N2 _2__ H3N • 2 H 3 x2 = 6 • 2 N 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
Balancing reactions (p17) • __3_ H2 + ____ N2 _2__ H3N • 6 = 3x 2 H 3 x2 = 6 • 2 N 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
Balancing reactions (p17) • __3_ H2 + __1_ N2 _2__ H3N • 6 = 3x 2 H 3 x2 = 6 • 2 = 1x 2 N 1 x2 = 2 • Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. • On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
