Recertification – what does it take? How often do you have to recertify? Every three years. How many points (RU’s) do you need to recertify? 18 points. How many points do you earn for being employed? 10.8 points (more than half). What is an RU? An RU is a recertification unit. One RU equals one CEU (Continuing Education Unit) Look for/ask for certificates listing these points when taking any classes, going to conferences , etc.
Information you need to know ASQ defines professional activities as they either increase your knowledge in one area of the Body of Knowledge (BoK), or that are job enhancing. Compile your documentation as you go and record it as a draft so you don’t forget anything. (Kurt spoke to the new online option to record this information.) Recertification journal packets may be submitted up to six months before or after your certification recertify by date. Do not include original documentation – copies only.
Additional information Who do I send my completed journal to? Your Recertification Chair (currently Jack Meagher) What does the Recertification Chair do with my information? Verifies all the requirements have been met and sends it off to the Recertification Coordinator at ASQ (currently Lisa Valle) What if any information is missing or there are questions? Your Recertification Chair will contact you and work with you to correct any issues.
Additional information What documentation is sent to ASQ? Only the cover page where the Recertification Chair initials beside each category that the point totals are correct and then dates and signs the bottom of the form. What happens to the package of information sent to the Recertification Chair? It is retained by the Recertification Chair for 6 months or sent back to the member.
Synchronizing certifications To initially synchronize two or more certifications that have differing expiration dates, all you need to do is include documentation and the 18.0 RU credits required to recertify the certification that is currently due. On the front cover of the recertification application form, list what other ASQ certifications you wish to have synchronized with the certification that is currently due along with their current expiration dates. You are not required to provide evidence for any of the other certifications when initially synchronizing. Once the certification that is currently due is approved, then all other certifications, as indicated on the application form, will be revised to expire at the same time as the certification that is most currently due.
Common pitfalls The most common issue is insufficient evidence. Example – 40 hours stated for a training session handwritten on a copied cover page for the training. Resolution – candidate is contacted and requested to either submit a document from the training provider that clearly states the CEU/RU units earned or a letter from his Manager verifying the hours attended. Using an outdated journal (check online before using the one you received from your previous recertification.) Other issues - not signing the application and/or including payment and only sending in cover page.

Computer-Based Testing (CBT) is an efficient way to provide a secure, consistent environment for certification and licensure while significantly enhancing the candidate experience. Testing is done in a secure proctored testing center at a personal computer workstation. Can customers choose to take a paper and pencil exam? No, beginning with the October exam window (September 1-October 15, 2016) all exams will only be offered via CBT. (Exceptions include Special Administrations and Translated exams which will roll out via CBT in 2017.)
We would appreciate your feedback We are requesting feedback from anyone taking exams under these new procedures. What was the check-in procedure like? What did they do/ask of you? Did they review your materials? Do you think they knew what to look for? What did you use for a calculator? Did they accept it?
We would appreciate your feedback Did you have enough room for all your materials? Could you access them in an efficient manner? Did you feel rushed or uncomfortable during the exam? Were you allowed to take breaks? What improvements can you suggest coming out of this experience?
