  3. Galician Production System • This production system start in 1945 • Actually around 3300 “bateas” and more than 11000 direct employees • Average 75 tn/”batea”/year • 110 000 tn/year for fresh market (average from 3 years) • 156 000 tn/year for processing market (average from 3 years)

  4. Galician Production System • Seed capture (October-april :stone; march-june: catchers) • Hanging rope (larvae 1-2 cm) • Divide into 2 (4-6 months later; 4,5-5,5 cm) • Harvest (1 year)

  5. Strengths regarding sustaintability • Not escapes and animals by-catch • Not use of drugs or other chemicals, nor antifoulings paints or other harzardous material • No GMO nor hormones are used • No use of feed • No effluents or waste water • Energy managment (comparing with long lines)
