  1. How do scientists in other countries understand each other?

  2. Think….. • If I speak Italian and you only understand English, can we communicate with each other? • Why? Or why not?

  3. Aside from language, what else needs to be universal for science?

  4. Answer • Measurements • What do we measure?

  5. What do we measure? • Length • Height • Width • Volume • Temperature • Time • Speed • Acceleration • Density • Weight

  6. How do we measure these things? • Length • Height • Width • Volume • Temperature • Time • Speed • Acceleration • Density • Weight

  7. What do scientists use to measure these things? • Length • Height • Width • Volume • Temperature • Time • Speed • Acceleration • Density • Weight

  8. There needs to be a universal measuring system • What is it? • International System of Units (SI) • SI units are what scientists use to label things they measure • Ex. 12m, 6.2cm, 55km/hr • We will be using these units all year • Here is a list to copy to reference

  9. SI units • Mass – grams • Length – meters • Volume – Liters or meters3 (length x width x height) • Temperature – Celsius or Fahrenheit • Time – seconds • Speed – meters/second (distance/time) • Acceleration – meters/second2 • Density – grams/meters3 (mass/volume) • Weight – newtons (kg x m/s2) (mass/acceleration) • Energy – Joules (kg x m2/s2)

  10. Prefixes for SI Units k= kilo = 103 h= hecta = 102 da=deca = 101 d=deci = 10-1 c =centi = 10-2 m=milli = 10-3 M= Mega = 106 G= Giga = 109 µ =micro = 10-6 n = nano = 10-9

  11. Time for some practice • 356mm = _________ m • 1.289 km = ________m • 67cm = _________mm • 7.329 x 103m = _________m • 0.00876 x 10-3km = ______km
