OBECTIVES OF THE CLASS Understanding grammatical structures • that differ from English • that encode complex form-meaning relationships • that have little perceptual saliency
Using Reading to Teach Reading • Part I of the class • Non- finite verbs • Ser, estar, haber • Por/para saber/conocer • Part II • Sentence structure
Research Results • The main objective is to get students reading an entire text in Spanish rather than just paragraphs or short stories. • Research shows that reading one complete story gives students continuity and facilitates comprehension.
“La casa en Mango Street” • By using the text, students see the grammar in actual usage • The language is easy for teenagers to read • The story appeals to teens
Results • Researchers found that this approach invites students to apply their knowledge of grammar. • Once the novel is completed, students can read short stories and grasp the grammar points addressed
Porand para– the lecture • Examine the use of prepositions in the novel • Demonstrate the difference using examples • Graphic organizers
Discussion sessions • Apply knowledge of the grammar • Fix grammar mistakes • Form – focused instruction – TA leads the discussion session
In class discussions • Discussions are designed to target the grammar points being addressed each week.
