How to Eliminate Child Labour? When 12 year old Smita was asked about her dreams, she said, “I want to go to office like other women with fancy bags.” She was asked if she goes to school and she answered, “No”. Smita is a rag picker. She earns by selling the scraps she picks on a regular basis. Child labour has been a prime concern in the country for a long time now. A lot of children below 18 work in mills, factories, shops etc. A whopping 10.1 million children are working and earning instead of pursuing education. That’s 10.1 million dreams lost in thin air! Are we going in the right direction with respect to economy, development and overall progress? One cannot deny the fact that as a nation we have let down our children. When children work as labourers, they are just not deprived of education; they are deprived of learning new things about this world. In addition to all the pain, these children are exposed to unhygienic conditions and there are chances that they fall sick. Especially, the children who work in factories and mills are exposed to hazardous chemicals which affect their health. This leads to illness and often it affects the physical development of these children.
Also, this has a huge effect on the mental status of the children. Unfortunately, they do not understand about the world as they are loaded with responsibility to earn daily wages without fail. These children come from underprivileged backgrounds where the parents are most often uneducated and they are dependent on their children from a very young age. In order to make both ends meet, entire family is required to work and earn. This is also why they believe in bearing and rearing several children. Their logic goes like this: More children = more earning It is important to help the children to come out from the shackles of toiling hard at a tender age. How can we eliminate child labour? It is not an easy challenge to accomplish. As an individual, if you come across children working, you should immediately report. This is one way of helping.
