  2. Research Students will begin developing research skills in seventh grade that will spiral through their academic career in the high school. The research will culminate in written research paper that will include a thesis, evidence from multiple sources including primary and secondary sources, a constant theme, cited sources and references.

  3. Mid-year and Culminating Experience Mid-terms will take place at the of the month in January. End-term will take place in the month of June.

  4. Expectations and skill development • Reading/ writing in accordance with Common Core Standards • Critically analyze history using multiple lenses • Critical thinking analysis • Learning multiple views about historic and current events • Working with technology in order to synthesize ideas through speech, debate, and group work • Use of Academic Vocabulary • Constructed Responses • DOCUMENT BASED QUESTIONS • Note-taking • Research and Expository Essay Writing • Outlining of chapters, index cards as study tools, and review packets • Interpretation of primary sources and secondary sources • Understanding Point of View, bias and propaganda

  5. This year in social studies we will study various topics in United States History and Government. The topics include: • Pre-Columbian Era • Native Americans; • Early explorers and British colonization; • The 13 American colonies; • The American Revolution; • U.S. Constitution, the Jeffersonian Era; • Jacksonian Democracy including Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny; • Civil War; • and the Era of Reconstruction

  6. Expectations and strategies to assist your child • Students are expected to be in school and in class on time every day. • Check teacher websites and calendars. • Homework is given on a nightly basis . • Students are expected to make up all work missed during an absence. • Reinforce quality of work • Preparation and readiness are keys to success • Pre-learn vocabulary, content, and concepts • Read and reread chapters and/or sections • Create vocabulary index cards • Study online documents choosing a vantage point. For example, if studying the Civil War, it is a good idea to study this topic from the point of view of a woman during that time, etc. • Create study groups • Create outlines of the text
