English • Narrative texts:- • -We will begin the term by exploring the famous novel ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl. This will give lots of opportunity for different genres of writing, as well as regular reading comprehension. • Throughout the year we will be writing for the following purposes: • Non-fiction texts: • - Biographies/ Non-Chronological Reports/ Recounts/ Arguments/ Campaigns • Creative Writing: • - Narrative/ Detailed descriptions/ Poetry Note: Children will always be challenged, according to their attainment and ability.
Handwriting • Cursive style of writing in all books • ‘Pen Licences’ • Preparation for Year 6 SATs
Maths • Written methods of addition, subtraction, long multiplication and division. • Interpreting data in a variety of forms such as tally charts and frequency tables • Conversions between different units of measurements. • Geometry- Coordinates, Shape and Space. • Know their times tables UP TO 12 X 12 and corresponding division facts • Place value – partitioning numbers, recognising the value of different digits and reading and writing whole numbers up to 1,000,000 • Recognising fractions, decimals, percentages and the relationship between them. • Telling the time - confidence with finding time differences is vital. Note: Children will always be challenged, according to their attainment and ability.
RE During the first half of the term, the topic covered will be ‘In the Beginning’. Your child will explore the two creation stories in Genesis, how they reveal Catholic beliefs and praying the psalms. In Year 5, there is a big focus on Scripture. Children will be using frequently using Bibles in class.
Topic Our Autumn Term will be divided between a History unit and a Geography unit. The topic studied in the second half term will be: ‘From Londinium to London’. This topic focuses on the geographical features of the local area and how these have changed during its history. Pupils will use maps, landmarks and identify how a region of the UK has changed. We will dip into land use patterns and how areas adapt due to population needs. The topic studied in the first half term will be: ‘Anglo Saxons: Invaders and Settlers’. The focus is on historical sources and identifying that our knowledge of history is made up from sources. Pupils will collect ideas and evidence towards answering the investigation question ‘Was the Anglo Saxon period really a Dark Age?’
PE PE lessons will take place on Tuesdays, so please make sure that your child’s PE kit is in school on those days. Label all uniforms please!
Homework Q. What does the word ‘trustworthy’ mean to you? To me the word ‘Trustworthy’ means someone you can depend on. Someone who will treat you with respect and listen to what you want.
Reading • Children will have the opportunity to change their reading book weekly. • Please ensure you sign your child’s reading log every night and comment regularly about their fluency and comprehension. • Please ensure your child reads for at least 10 minutes each night with an adult asking questions, particularly why and how.
