First Eucharist Parents Meeting Wednesday, January 29, 2014 Saturday, February 1, 2014
Opening Prayer O Lord, give us the wisdom and the courage to help our children as you would, to develop in them a Christ-like love for all people, to nurture in them a desire to give and not simply to take,to teach them to be doers of Your Holy Word. Guide us in our responsibilities and duties as parents; May we be the expression of Your love to our children. As we begin to prepare our children to receive the Most Blessed Sacrament, give us the wisdom to guide them, the patience to teach them, and the vigilance to accustom them to choose good through our example. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, St. Joseph, and all the angels and saints. Amen.
Overview of the First Eucharist Program • 1) In the classroom: • Using the textbook “Eucharist: Do this in memory of me.” (RCL publications) • Seven chapters focusing on: • 1) Belonging to God’s family through Baptism and Confirmation • 2) How the early Christians gathered together as a church family, and how we gather together in the Mass • 3) Listening for God’s call and listening to God’s Word in the Liturgy of the Word • 4) Giving thanks to God for being fed during the Liturgy of the Eucharist • 5) The Mass as a remembrance of the Last Supper in the Eucharistic Prayer • 6) Celebrating Holy Communion during the Mass like the disciples did on the Road to Emmaus • 7) Living the Mass through service to others.
Overview of First Eucharist Program(Continued) • 2) As a family: • By reading Bible stories about the Eucharist with your child • By determining your child’s readiness to receive the Sacrament • By reading all the distributed written materials • By making your child’s First Eucharist banner together • Instructions are contained in the pink Holy Redeemer Family Information booklet • DUE on the day of your child’s First Eucharist • And most importantly, by celebrating Mass together every Sunday and keeping the Sabbath holy. • “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to assist at Mass. They are also to abstain from such work or business that would inhibit the worship to be given to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, or the due relaxation of the mind and body.” (Canon Law #1247)
Reminder about Receiving the Eucharist at Mass • The Church sets out specific guidelines regarding how we should prepare ourselves for receiving the Lord’s Body and Blood in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
