Car Race • Provide a range of small cars, a cardboard tube or guttering, vertical number line and medals (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). • Use blocks to heighten/lower the slope of the cylinder – how far will it go? • Predict what might happen if you add extra blocks. Will it go further if it is higher or lower? • Which car went the furthest? What number did it reach on the number line? • Predict which car will go the furthest and why? Look at the biggest/smallest – does the biggest car go the furthest? • Use 3 tubes (1 per child) – which 1 comes first/last? • This activity can be used to support the following domains at 1 *, 2 ** and 3*** • Number word sequences – How many cars at the start line? Ordinal numbers – which car came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, last? • Read and Write numbers – Read and record number reached on the chart. • Structuring Numbers – Grouping – Line the cars up by colour/size – which car will come next? • Counting and Comparing Collections – How many blue/red/green cars? Are there more blue or red cars? What colour have you got the most/least of? Can you put them in size order? Which car is the smallest/biggest? • Counting Strategies , Early addition and subtraction/ facts to 10 – The blue car reached number 6, how many more to reach the finishing line? The green car reached 5 and the red car reached 3, how many more would the red car need? How many cars have taken part in the race? How many are left? How many all together? • Early Multiplication and Division – Can you share the cars into 2 teams. Can you put them into pairs? • Patterns and Relationships – Can you line the cars up in a pattern by colour/size? • Solve Simple Number Stories – A bulldozer joins the line, will it go faster/slower/further than the car?
Car Wrapping Paper • Provide car wrapping paper and coloured counters. • Show wrapping paper, how many do you think there are? Count to check. • Match coloured counters to cars. • Cut paper into strips, use to play lotto or as flash cards for subitising. • Laminate and cut out cars, use for snap, matching, pairs, sorting. • This activity can be used to support the following domains at 1 *, 2 ** and 3*** • Number word sequences – How many in each line/row? • Read and Write numbers – Record how many of each colour on the chart. • Structuring Numbers – Grouping –Flash a strip/group of cars – how many green? • Counting and Comparing Collections – Are there more green cars than blue? Which colour has the most/least? How many cars have pictures/numbers. • Counting Strategies , Early addition and subtraction/ facts to 10 – How many yellow/red cars? How many all together? • Patterns and Relationships – Can you find a pattern? Can you replicate pattern using counters? Can you continue the pattern? • Solve Simple Number Stories – Can you make your own pattern using toy cars, pegs, etc. Can your friend make the same pattern?
Car Park • Provide a shoe box lid, range of cars, tickets (numerals or dots) and timers. • Car park ‘guard’ hands out tickets, match number to parking bay. How many spaces are filled/empty? How many more cars to fill the car park? • Use empty car park and put numbers on the cars. Where will they park? Which car comes first/last? • Kim’s Game – take 1 car away, what number was it? • Mark spaces 1-12, add in a spinner (numerals or dots) to determine where your car will park? • Domino cars – stick domino patterns on cars, match dot pattern total to the number in the parking bay e.g. match 2 and 3 pattern to 5. • This activity can be used to support the following domains at 1 *, 2 ** and 3*** • Number word sequences – Ordinal numbers – which car came first, second, last? How many lined up at entry point? • Read and Write numbers – Match number on ticket to car park space. • Structuring Numbers – Grouping – How many dots all together on cars/spinner? • Counting and Comparing Collections – How many black/silver cars? How many cars/trucks? Which colour has the most/least? Which colour has more/less than…? • Counting Strategies , Early addition and subtraction/ facts to 10 – There are 4 cars in the car park, 1 car goes home, how many are left? Set sand-timers for cars, cars leave when time is up, how many cars leave? How many cars are left? • Early Multiplication and Division –At the car park entry point, line the cars up in 2s, can you count them in 2s? • Mental Agility – Basic Facts – There are 3 cars in the car park, how many more cars need to arrive to make 6? How many more cars do you need to fill the car park? • Patterns and Relationships – Line cars up in a pattern, black, silver, red, black, silver, red, etc • Solve Simple Number Stories – Along come 2 more cars, but the car park is full. What will happen? A bus comes along, how many spaces will it need?
Car Wash • Provide car wash, range of vehicles, sponges, price list, code panel, range of timers (e.g. 5 minute sand-timer), range of coins. • Put the vehicles into a line, which vehicle is first, second, last, etc? Which vehicle is the biggest/smallest? How many vehicles all together? Which vehicle comes before/after the blue truck? • Type codes into code panel on car wash machine. • Use different timers (e.g. 1/3/5 minute sand-timers), which timer would be best for which car (e.g. small car = 1 minute timer) • Pay for car wash at the till, how much will it cost? Match the coins to the price list. How many coins will you need? Which item is the most/least expensive? • Use crate/outdoor area to create a role-play car wash – how many buckets of water to wash smallest/biggest vehicles? • This activity can be used to support the following domains at 1 *, 2 ** and 3*** • Number word sequences – Which car is first, last, etc in the queue? • Read and Write numbers – Match or ‘type’ numbers on code panel, make up code cards for other children. Use picture price list to pay. • Structuring Numbers – Grouping – How many vehicles are red/yellow? How many all together? How many vans/lorries/trucks? • Counting and Comparing Collections – Which item is the most/least expensive at the car wash? Which timer would be best for each vehicle? Which car would take the longest/shortest time to wash? • Counting Strategies , Early addition and subtraction/ facts to 10 – We have 4 washed cars and 2 in the queue, how many all together? There are 3 vehicles in the line and 1 in the car wash, how many all together? There were 5 cars in the queue and 2 have been washed, how many are left? • Patterns and Relationships – Create a repeating pattern in the queue e.g. red, yellow, red, yellow, etc. • Solve Simple Number Stories – A big red bus has arrived in the queue, will it fit? How long will it take? What will it cost to wash it?
