  2. W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) One of five domains of W3C to pursue accessibility for people with disabilities: • Reviews W3C standards such as HTML for accessibility throughout production • Maintains web accessibility guidelines for developers and other practitioners • Coordinates internationally with web accessibility research and development

  3. W3C standard that defines accessibility requirements for websites and tools: Includes requirements for interactive web applications, services, and media Promotes an inclusive design-for-all to improve ease-of-use for everyone Requirements are independant of the web technology or the delivery channel Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

  4. Perceivable – any visual and auditory information, including multimedia Operable – functionality such as controls, navigation, and transactions Understandable – predictable and simple instructions and functionality Robust – compatible with the broadest possible platforms and technologies Web Accessibility Principles

  5. Perceivable – resizable text, captions, audio descriptions, sign language, ... Operable – remote control, interactive menus, customizable timeouts, ... Understandable – dialogs, TV guides, instructions, error messages, ... Robust – interface with other devices such as assistive technologies, ... Examples of the Applicability of WCAG to IPTV

  6. Several technological components need to work together for accessibility: Hardware accessibility of the devices, including the remote controls Operating system that provides core accessibility functionality and APIs Content developed with accessibility considerations from the start Interdependency with IPTV Providers and Set-Top-Boxes

  7. Some of the key challenges to facilitate IPTV accessibility include: Diverse landscape of hardware devices, operating systems, bandwidth, ... Documentation of accessibility support across the different systems Awareness raising and training for manufacturers and content providers Implementation Challenges

  8. W3C work on IPTV • About to start: • Workshop in Sept 2010 • Presentation to our members in Nov • Charter being developped by staff • WAI dependency
