What is Conferring? Conferring is… • one-on-one time with a student • teacher developing a connection and relationship with a student • Teacher helps build independence in students • differentiated instruction • student learns transferable skills in reading and writing
Architecture of a Conference • Research • Compliment • Decide • Teach
Research Phase • Teacher lets student set the agenda for the conference by asking, “What are you working on as a writer?” • Get on a line of thinking about the student’s reading or writing work by asking research questions and reading over student work. • Name what we notice or heard student say • Read over work and listen attentively
Compliment Notice and name what the child has already done well as a reader or writer and remind the child to do this in the future. “I notice you flipped back through the book finding evidence for you thinking. That’s good reading work, holding onto idea from one page to the next. Keep going with that strategy.”
Decide and Teach Decide “What can I teach this student that will help him/her become a better reader/writer/thinker.” Teach
