Hermit crabs Reproduce sexually – males give sperm to fertilize female’s eggs Females with eggs stay out of salt water until it’s time to hatch Give birth after a month or so – eggs should be dark gray Hatch in salt water, go through up to 3 months of metamorphosis When it has a shell, it molts and becomes a juvenile hermit crab Parents don’t care for young
Sponges Reproduce sexually/asexually – usually have both male and female parts Sexually: male parts release sperm and females are fertilized, larva comes out and finds something to grow on into adulthood Asexually: budding – piece of sponge breaks off to become another sponge Parents don’t care for young
King cobras Sexually reproduce – coil bodies together for days After mating, males return to their homes Females build large nests and lay up to 25 eggs in them Females incubate eggs by coiling up on top of them until it’s time to hatch Approximately 55 days till hatching time Once babies are born, they’re on their own – some can already catch prey like rats Average life span of 20 years
gibbons Reproduce sexually: males and females mate for life – start mating at 12-13 years old Females are pregnant for about 7 months – one baby at a time Females take care of young for about 6-7 years until they can start a family group of their own Family group is the two mates for life, plus other under-7-year-old juveniles
Owls Reproduce sexually: males call females to their trees with promises of food After female accepts food, fertilization and preening occur No nests built – they take over abandoned ones or use the ground Up to 13 eggs – most only have three or four 30 days of incubation and fierce defending before hatching Males bring food about 10 times a day Some newborns are killed by siblings or lack of food Weeks after hatching, fledging (learning to fly) starts Most chicks leave after learning to fly – ready to reproduce in about a year
