Critical Literary Analysis Paper A very, very brief intro!
CLAP quarter-by-quarter • September: • Browse themes and books • Select two-three books for one theme • Read 1st novel during September and October (reading the shorter novel first is always a good idea) • Read 2nd novel during November, December, early January • 3rd quarter- Finalize book choice! Research, take notes, outline, and write first copy • 4th quarter- revise and complete final copy
Final product • You will write an 8-10 page paper on a theme for one of the books you have read for outside reading. • You will read two books (one each quarter) and select the one that you best understood/ find the most resources on/ feel comfortable with! • You will need at least 5 solid, useful, and focused secondary sources (literary criticism) • You may not use Sparknotes, Booknotes, etc for sources- these do not count and there are better ones out there!
Steps • Select titles • Read • Begin researching for theme and focus • Collect secondary sources and create working bibliography • Take notes on sources • Propose your topic • Write thesis • Outline, outline, outline!
Proficient Perusing • Become familiar with a couple books • Do this by: • Touching them- • Go ahead– judge them by the cover if you want to! • Pick them up – see how long they are. • Read the back cover! • Reading a couple pages. Does the style appeal to you? The English language can sound quite different depending on the time period a book was published or the time period that is being written about.
Things you will do today! • Peruse the pile of books • Look at the list - what theme(s) is this book under? • Read at least three pages from two texts • Submit to Miss. Cheikh: Write on an index card one-two books you might want to read (why?) and one book you definitely do not want to read! • Cross off books on your list, circle books to find out more about!
