Bell Ringer • You have 5 minutes to write your answer down in your notebook. • Where does energy for life processes come from?
3.2 Notes Energy Flow
Source: • Sunlight is the main energy source for life on earth • Other sources: - energy stored in inorganic chemical compounds
Energy from the Sun Photosynthesis • Autotrophs use light energy to power chemical reactions • Convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and carbohydrates (sugars & starches)
Autotrophs vs Heterotrophs: • Autotrophs- • Can produce own food (producers) • Capture energy from sunlight or chemicals to produce food • Example: Plants, some algae • Heterotrophs- • Cannot produce own food (consumers) • Get energy and food supply from other organisms • Example: Animals, fungi • Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, detritivores, decomposers
Energy Flow • Flows through an ecosystem in one direction • Sun --> autotrophs --> to various heterotrophs Food Chain series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
3.2 Review • Fill out Heterotrophs table
