Shoe Impression Characteristics • Class characteristics • Type of shoe • Shoe brand • Size • Individual characteristics • Wear pattern • Outsole • Insole
Making a plaster cast of a print • Spray the dirt with hair spray • This helps hold the print in place for the plaster • Mix 2 cups of plaster with 1 cup of water in a large plastic bag • Should be the consistency of pancake batter • Cut 1 corner of the bag to pour out the plaster
Start at one end of the print, overlapping the plaster and cover the entire print • Place toothpicks in crisscross pattern • This will strengthen the plaster form • Let dry and harden
Other methods • Could also use magnetic fingerprint dust to attach to print on clean surface • Electrostatic paper could cast dust to cling to paper and make shoe print • Adhesive sheets to lift dust prints off a floor
Obtaining Controls from Suspect • Take shoe cleaning sponge or ink roller and roll on bottom of shoe • Have shoe make a complete outsole print on paper • Use impression box with soft foam
Look for at least 4 individual characteristics with impression to match the shoes worn at the crime scene. • Sometimes you can’t be sure if the impression at the scene is a match, that’s ok.
