  2. Blinds are Judged on Control

  3. Prerequisites: • Basic Obedience (Sit, Heel, Come, Go) • Force Fetch • Collar Conditioned • Simple Single Marking (yard/field) • Introduction to: • Pile Work • Bucket Drills • Pattern Blinds

  4. Control at the Line • Positioning your dog (don’t forget about you) • Spine (nose to tail) • Hand • Command • Cue • Hand • Execution

  5. Drill for Control at the LineIt’s heeling; not lining! • Wagon Wheel (4-8-16) • Clean Field • White Bumpers • Orange Bumpers • Mixed W/O • Forgiveness • Encouragement

  6. Drills for the Initial LineBird-Boy Blinds (can’t go wrong) • Zigzag (pyramid) • Wagon Wheel • Chinese Water • Water Entry/Exits

  7. Drill for the Persistence of the Line (split drill) • Pattern blinds • Cold blinds We’re not there yet…

  8. Stopping on the Whistlego-stop-come • Teach the commands by your side (sit-whistle-sit) (whistle-sit) (whistle) • Get the mechanics and his butt straight (here-whistle) • Identify the pile • Send to a pile on a rope • Send without a rope (e-collar) • Enforce the commands, while encouraging momentum • 2:1 ratio (Go : Stop)

  9. Casting Drills / Handling Drills(more on this another day) • Start with a T (one leg at a time) • Move to Double T • Swim-bys • Wagon wheel casting converted to eight handed casting

  10. Casting – the task • Can he see? • Background • Lighting (the sun/too dark) • Clothing (white coats?) • Does he understand? • Drill • Drill • Drill • Will he execute? • Consistency • Confidence

  11. The Delivery • Don’t forget the return line! • Do correct avoidance (enforce “here”) • Don’t set-up for failure (bank running) • Wagon wheel • Change the position to next bird • Throw the bumper back in place (distraction) • Send toward next blind

  12. Watch Out for the Pitfalls • Confusion (that’s always your fault) • Too much too fast (one step at a time) • Teach • Encourage • Be Patient • Loss of Momentum (pig like) • Avoidance (bugging at the line) • Loss of Marking Skills - train for a balance
