Early History - School • It was in High school when Jeff Bezos passion for computers emerged. • The valedictorian chose to attend Princeton University to continue on with his study of computers. • He graduated with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering.
Early History • After graduating Bezos got employed on Wall Street. It was here where he started to involved with finance. • Bezos first job was with Fitel, a company fabricating a network for international trade. • Later Bezos was employed by Bankers Trust and eventually was given the title as vice president. • Bezos then moved to D.E Shaw and captured the role vice president role once again.
Early History • In 1994 there was no sign of internet commerce. • Bezos observation of the increase of use of the internet by 2,300 percent a year at this time made Bezos start thinking about the possible opportunities. • His research led to his findings that the market for online mail book catalogue did not yet existed. • His mission was to create a internet location where people could see the available stock of books and place orders directly.
The Start • Jeff left his secure position on Wall Street and moved to Seattle with his wife, Mackenzie. • On July 16, 1995, Amazon.com went public and it was run from his two bedroom house. • In the first 30 days , Amazon sold books to all 50 states and in 50 countries. • By September Bezos website sales were $20,000 a week.
The Start • Bezos and his co-workers invented Email order verification ,customer reviews and one-click shopping. • Amazon went public in 1997, and two years later its stock value was double its two highest competitors value combined. • Bezos parents invested $300, 000 into the company’s stock and by 2000 they were billionaires.
Expansion • Jeff took the expression go big or go home to his company. • Bezos wanted to expand his store to “Earth’s biggest earth store” to “Earth’s biggest anything store .“ • People criticized Bezos saying that he was going to big to fast. • Bezos made business history by expansion. • Jeff’s website started selling electronics, toys, movies and more. • In 2002 the company expanded even more adding clothing sales to their website.
Expansion • By 2003 Amazon launched A9, a new division put out to developed a commercial search engine that focuses on e-commerce websites. • They also offered 3000 different brand names from their online sporting goods store. • Bezos founded an aerospace company called Blue Orgin in 2004. The company was set out to develop new technology for spaceflight.
Kindle • In 2007, Bezos brought a handheld electronic book called Kindle. • Kindle uses “E Ink” technology to render text like a print like visual. • Font size is adjustable • Wireless Internet connectivity allowing online purchasing of books. • Books are cheap ranging from $2-$9.99. • Costs approximately $360.
Kindle vs. Apple • Kindle dominated 95% of the U.S market for forms of electronic books until in 2010 when Apple released the iPad. • Kindles are lighter and thinner. • It has longer battery life and faster page turning capability. • It is also much cheaper then the iPad.
Future • They sold more e books then hardcover books. • It’s 200% increase makes the future look that e-books will takeover hard cover books. • These electronic books will help the environment and will reduce waste of resources.
Amazon.com • Headquartered in Seattle, Washington • It is America's largest online retailer • Amazon.com has 3 times as much Internet sales revenue as runner up, Staples, as of January 2010. • Bezos called the company Amazon after the seemingly endless South American river with its numberless branches.
Honors • Named Time magazine's Man of the Year and Washington’s CEO Person of The Year in 1999. • He was chosen by U.S News and World Report as one of Americas best leaders in 2008.
