  3. What is a Team? Teams may be portrayed as effective work groups whose effectiveness rests in the degree of motivation, co-ordination and purpose and whose synergy produces an energy and creativity which is beyond them as individuals (Spencer & Pruss 1992)

  6. Teams and The Organization • Working in teams confers the following benefits: • Improved use of human capital resources through synergy • Better communication • Increased focus

Groups v Teams A Team has the following characteristics A Group has the following characteristics Focus is on individual contribution Performance is the sum of individual contributions Lack of cohesive values leads to requirement for strong leadership Accountability is on an individual basis with no overall responsibility for performance Low level of interaction between individuals • Focus is on collective effort • Performance is greater than the sum of the individual contributions • The sharing of values and goals allows the leader to apply light steering pressure • There is individual and mutual accountability for the overall performance of the team • There is a high level of interaction between members

Emotional Intelligence in Teams • EQ is the ability to use social skills to enhance team function • Results of having high level of EQ in the team: • Reduction in conflict • Keeping of commitments • Increased understanding and use of strengths • Personal integrity is valued • Proactive approach rather than impulsive reactive approach to problems

Negative Behaviors in Teams • Any or all of the negative behaviors identified below have the potential to damage the functionality of a team • Point scoring • Non-constructive criticism • Sulking and avoidance • Defending as opposed to listening • Aggression or over-assertiveness • Formation of cliques

  14. How To maintain your Rotary Team • Don’t keep people forever in the same teams • However ensure continuity (head of a team is a member of the team next year) • Set Clear Goals • Agree on a clear communication strategy • Set the timeline and basis of success measurment

  15. There is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do. Anybody could have done it. Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. Consequently, it wound up that Nobody told Anybody, so Everybody blamed Somebody. But still NOBODY DID IT. Anonymous
