  1. Georgia Beaumont Isabel Robbins English Leon Trotsky

  2. Early Life Leon Trotsky was born Lev Davidovich Bronstein on October 26, 1879. In 1897 he founded South Russia Workers Union and in 1898 the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. He changed his name after he escaped from prison in 1902. He was put in prison because of his political activities. After escaping Trotsky met Vladimir Lenin in London and joined him in the staff of the Communist newspaper. In 1903 Bolsheviks were led by Lenin while Trotsky was among the Menshevik leaders. In 1905 Trotsky returned to Russia and participated in the first Russian Revolution and that year he was elected President of the St Petersburg Soviet. He was soon arrested and deported to Western Siberia in 1907.

  3. Military Life He became a member of the central committee of the Bolshevik Party and became second in command to Lenin. He was appointed Peoples Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs and managed the founding of the Red Army. After Lenin died in 1924 Stalin gained control of the Soviet Union. Stalin expelled Trotsky from the Executive Committee of Comintern in 1927. In 1928 Trotsky was banished to Alma Ata in Kazakhstan and then deported to Turkey in 1929.

  4. Stalin and Trotsky represented opposite directions for Communism. Trotsky used his writing to establish an alternative direction for Communism which was class equality between intellectuals and capitalists.

  5. Stalin implemented communist policies that were exceedingly costly both in lives, and in depriving the Soviet people from freedom.

  6. Death Trotsky had a hard time finding a country he was allowed to stay in. In 1937 after staying temporarily in several countries Trotsky was allowed to live in Mexico. In 1940 he was attacked by one of Stalin’s followers with an ice axe. Leon Trotsky died the next day.
