K6Sn[Zn4Sn4S17]: a sulfide-based zeolite-like material • The compound K6Sn[Zn4Sn4S17] is ion-exchange properties reminiscent of small pore zeolites. • K6Sn[Zn4Sn4S17]: exchanges its K ions for heavy metal ions such as Hg2+ and Pb2+. • The material can remove selectively Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions from water solutions and may have potential for applications in heavy metal environmental remediation. • The synthesis of K6Sn[Zn4Sn4S17] was achieved with the alkali polychalcogenide flux method. • We are currently investigating the ion-exchange properties in more detail. • We strongly believe that detailed fundamental and exploratory studies of open framework sulfides as ion-exchangers for heavy metal ions could contribute significantly to separation science.
