Conjunction Junction…! Conjunctions are used to combine smaller phrases or clauses. Independent clauses can be their own sentence. Dependent clauses NEED to be with an independent clause. We use conjunctions to hook these items up!

Which conjunctions do I use? There are several types that can be used. ONLY CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS REQUIRE A SEMICOLON (;) Refer to your sheet for a list of conjunctions The MOST common are the FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So These have a comma before they are used.

Dependent Clauses The conjunction is added to the beginning or middle of the clause: After I left school…. Whenever I listen to my IPod…. Even though I enjoy writing…. Notice that there is NO way these phrases can be on their own. They need something to complete them.
