Discipleship Within the Battle Matthew 28:18-20 NIV 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  3. Discipleship Within the Battle • Does a disciple of Jesus make disciples of Jesus by definition? • Can someone be a disciple of Jesus and make the choice not to make disciples of Jesus? • What does the spiritual battle have to do with this?

  4. Discipleship Within the Battle • Who – You //Anyone you cross paths with in life • What – Make disciples (followers of Jesus) • How – Behavior, Speech, Time investment, Use of resources, Relationships • When – 24/7 • Where – Wherever you go • Why – You have been authorized, delegated, deputized, empowered How can we be intentional without being programmatic?

  5. Discipleship Within the Battle Conclusions • Each of us and all of us bear this calling • We are to be prepared to make disciples of Jesus • We are to be willing to make disciples of Jesus • We are to have produced disciples of Jesus (sent them out) • We are to be making disciples of Jesus (messy and labor intensive) Why? It is a battle!

  6. Discipleship Within the Battle 1 John 2: NIV 12 I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14 I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father.I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

  7. Discipleship Within the Battle Conclusions • The process of maturity (which is the path of discipleship) is not merely academic. It is experiential. • We must engage in spiritual battles and learn from them. Failing to engage is to already lose and live in disobedient ignorance.

  8. Discipleship Within the Battle • What have you learned from your battles with the world system? • What have you learned from your battles with your flesh? • What have you learned from your battles with the devil?
