Aspartofhisstewardshipofabroad,multilateralteam,Fredsetsthe company'sgovernmentengagementstrategyonthemostpressingpolicy issuesfacingthetechnologyindustrytoearntrustandadapttoregulation,enableinclusiveeconomicgrowth,andusetechnologyto solvebigsocietalproblems.Thisincludescloudcomputing,privacy, trade,cybersecurity,education,racialequity,immigration,andemerging technologies. FredjoinedMicrosoftin2000asDirectorofStateGovernmental Affairs,buildingateamresponsibleforoutreachtogovernors,mayors, andlocalelectedofficialsineverystatecapital.Inthatposition,Fred integratedon-the-groundstateadvocacyworkintoMicrosoft'soverall corporatestrategyincoordinationwiththepublicsector,policy,and lobbyingteams.LaterFredwaspromotedtoMicrosoft'sManaging DirectorofU.S.GovernmentAffairsin2009andCorporateVice Presidentin2015.

Fredbelievesacknowledgingthepivotalroleplayedbyone'smanager andmanager'smanagerinprofessionalgrowthanddevelopmentis essential.Therearetwosignificantreasonsforthis.Firstly,thesetwo individualsserveastheemployees’advocateswithintheorganization. Theyaretheoneswhoarefamiliarwiththedecision-makersandthe criteriausedtoevaluatethequalityofwork.Secondly,theyhavethe powerto determinewhetherto investin theemployees’development andtorecommendthemforhigher-levelopportunities.Dependingon wheretheemployeestandsintheorganizationalhierarchy,these relationshipscanhelpthemprogressin theircareer.Theimportanceof theserelationshipshasremainedconstantovertime,astheemployee mustperformtheirjobwellandearnthesupportof theirsuperiors.A championwhoadvocatesfortheemployeeandexposesthemto other stakeholderswhocanappreciatetheirtalentsisvitalto success.
