Objectives: To present the Iditarod race which takes place in Alaska. It is an introduction to unit 2 in the book Horizon. To present vocabulary from the text while using visual aids such as pictures and a short movie.
In the Iditarod race people called “mushers” drive sleds pulled by dogs. The teams follow a trail from Anchorage to Nome – across 1,770 km. it is called the Last Great Race. This race is in memory of another race in 1925 when people from Alaska took a race against time in order to save children.
The Last Great Race It is the longest and most difficult race in the world. It lasts almost two weeks .Mushers and their team might fall off a cliff or a moose might attack them. They hardly sleep and eat. The sleds are pulled by dogs . The mushers depend on their dogs to get them safely through the race.
