  1. Creating a Program of Work GEORGIA Chapter Officer Retreat for Excellence September 7, 2012

  2. What is a Program of Work? • Chapters should set this up annually. • It is an outline of activitiesfor the year. • It includes: • specific goals • means of reaching them • adequate provision for checking on accomplishments.

  3. Why is a POW Necessary? Every chapter needs to have a Program of Work to guide them in their actions and work. It reflects a majority of the members. Tells members what role they play in carrying out each activity.

  4. Steps in Developing a POW Review as a chapter. Decide on activities that will be included. Put it in writing. Check with school authorities and others concerned

  5. Brainstorm Goals! • Create 3 goals for your chapter • Make your goals SMART. • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Realistic • Time bound

  6. Bad Examples • Raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. • Raise money to take a limo to the National Conference. • Take 100 members to State Conference.

  7. Good Examples Raise $100 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by October 1, 2012. Raise $300 to cover the costs of registration for 5 people to attend the Fall Leadership Conference by October 15, 2012. Have 10% of our membership compete at the State Conference.

  9. Share Your Ideas! A representative from each chapter will share one goal.

  11. Topics of Discussion The heart of TSA is found at the local level. A successful chapter should include: • Promotion/Recruitment • Leadership Development • Fundraising • Service Activities • Chapter Activities

  12. Membership/Promotion Why promote yourself? • Student Recruitment • School Recognition • Community Recognition • Fundraising/Contributions

  13. Membership/Promotion • Use available resources • www.gatsa.org • www.tsaweb.org • Create posters/flyers to hang around school • “Advertise” on school news show • Hold an open housefor potential new members • Send invitations to recruit students

  14. Membership/Promotion • Newspaper Articles • Officers • Participation at Conferences • Board of Education recognition • Encourage participation in the Achievement Program • Any other ideas?

  15. Leadership Development Student leadership is important • Makes it easier for your advisor • It’s good public relations for the students to be the center of attention • We are the TechnologySTUDENTAssociation!

  19. Fundraising Activities Never let money (or the lack thereof) stand between a motivated student and an opportunity.

  20. Fundraising Ideas • Carwashes • Yard sales • Magazine drive • Selling school logo items (keychains, bumper stickers) • Sponsoring a school dance • Videos (highlights of sporting events, graduation videos) • Selling items created by the program (t-shirts, mouse-pads) • Tech Camps

  21. Fundraising Ideas • Selling concessions at a sporting event • Selling a food product after school • Magazine sales • Selling cookie dough, pizza, etc. to neighbors and friends • Local restaurants that give a percentage of sales for a certain night • Raffles

  25. You Have Some Ideas…Now What? Work as an officer team to decided which activities will be best for your chapter. Set dates and deadlines. Put these ideas into your calendar. Turn in your Program of Work before dinner tomorrow night.
