Summary of SC/RP discussions with the LHC experiment RSOs M. Silari, SC/RP RSOC, 7.04.2004
Induced radioactivity Air activation in the experiments (mainly ATLAS and CMS due to luminosity): look at the existing reports, in order to verify if past calculations have to be revised. The aim is to decide on whether or not all release points (the stacks) have to be equipped with monitoring stations. Activation of materials in the experiments. A prediction of the induced radioactivity in the various detector materials is needed for: a) the assessment of future radioactive waste, b) the estimation of individual and collective doses for maintenance interventions. Activation tests of selected materials at the SPS this year RSOC, 7.04.2004
Operational issues Individual dosimetry of persons carrying out experiments and tests in controlled radiation areas not at CERN but in other laboratories. RP manpower and equipment needed during LHC operation (No specific needs are foreseen for the commissioning phase) Radiation monitoring: it has been agreed to plan the installation of a few PMI monitors in the eight gangways inside ATLAS, linked to RAMSES. The aim is to provide remote radiation monitoring in case of access in the detectors during short LHC stops. Radioactive sources to be installed inside the detectors RSOC, 7.04.2004
INB INB rules and procedures: INB perimeter, classification of areas for the zoning study, “étude déchets”, traceability,… Future decommissioning: who will pay for and where to store the huge amount of radioactive waste expected from the experiments? RSOC, 7.04.2004
