  3. Childhood • Her father died when she was still a small child • Abandoned by her mother • Emily left school and stayed with one relative or another From Pg 10 & 11

  4. Teen Years • 1929 - Married into Gan Family in Emerald Hill at the age of 14 (Pg 6) • 1930 – First child, Richard, was born (Pg 13) • Father-in-law’s death just before the Second World War and Emerald Hill was left to Richard (Pg 38)

  5. Japanese Occupation( 1942 – 1945) • Left Emerald Hill and moved to sea-side bungalow in Siglap until end of Japanese Occupation (Pg 7)

  6. After Japanese Occupation • Return to Emerald Hill • Emily began to take charge over the household and organising the mansion; putting everything back in shape (Pg 7)
