  1.  Why Robots are Awesome The Walton Robotics Team

  2. What is a robot?  "I can't define a robot, but I know one when I see one." Joseph Engelberger

  3. 1 : a device that automatically performs complicated often repetitive tasks2 : a mechanism guided by automatic controls Source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

  4. The DARPA Grand Challenge • DARPA stands for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency • The Grand Challenge was a national competition for autonomous vehicles • The track was a 7.36 mile course across the Mojave Desert • 5 teams successfully completed the race, and first place finished in less than 7 hours (6:54)

  5. Robonaut 2

  6. Urbie

  7. ASIMO

  8. BigDog

  9. StickyBot

  10. Topio

  11. AiBO

  12. Predator

  13. Nasa Mars rover

  14. iRobot Roomba

  15. Robot Names(to look up on your own) • Stanley (a Volkswagen) • Robonaut 2 (can replace astronauts with many tasks) • Urbie (explores houses using cameras) • ASIMO (humanoid demonstration robot) • BigDog (military pack mule) • StickyBot (climbs smooth, vertical surfaces) • Topio (plays ping-pong) • AIBO (Sony robot dog) • Predator (Military UAV drone) • Nasa Mars rover

  16. Careers that Involve Robotics • doctors & surgeons • astronauts  • engineers (like designing roller coasters and self-driving cars) • farmers • inventors You might not realize it, but all kinds of different jobs depend on robotic technology. These are fun careers that do new and creative things to solve problems. And everyone wants to use these new tools, so you can make lots of money, too!

  17. Opportunities & Interests • Robots aren't just used for one type of career or purpose. • Robotics applies to your own interests and talents (music, sports, computers). • Math and science are important, but so is creativity and problem solving. It's not just about being smart. • People that work with robots get to make new and exciting things everyday. Their inventions help change the world! • Robots are unique, useful, and fun to work with!

  18. RoboCup • An international robotics soccer competition • Includes multiple leagues: • small-size • middle-size • standard-platform • RoboCup Junior •  Also includes robotics exposition, new technology demonstration, and education

  19. RoboCup - AiBO

  20. RoboCup - small size

  21. RoboCup - Middle Size

  22. RoboCup Humanoid

  24. What about school? • Robotics is a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as programming. • The Walton Robotics Team requires much more than these fields, however. • We have programmers, builders, designers, graphic artists as well as a business team • Engineering does require math and science • Working hard in school is important since passing grades are required for competition attendance in the Walton Robotics Team

  25. Some Quick Facts • FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) hosts the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a worldwide competition that began in 1992 • Now nearly 3500 high school teams compete and more join every year • We received about $15,000 in grants this year alone • We get multiple days off school to go to the competitions

  26. How to Get Involved... NOW! • Math, science, and technology are important to preparing for a future in robotics. Your classes now really do help set you up for cool opportunities in the future. Learning and working hard is important for any job, but especially for work with robots. • If you want to start learning and exploring with robots, our team will be having a camp for a week this summer that gives you the chance to build and program your own robot, then compete with the other campers!

  27. FIRST Breakaway Video

  28. Peachtree Photo Slideshow Will Go Here I finished a slideshow, but I will add it in after we are finished with the rest of the powerpoint.
