If so: • You have stage fright • The only way to deal with stage fright is: • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
Speaking in Debate • The goal is to change someone’s mind or way of thinking about a topic • Voice and body language are very important
Elements of Persuasion: • Body language – proper posture gives the message that you are confident
Elements of Persuasion: • Pronunciation – it’s important to pronounce each word • Avoid slang • Don’t slur words • Avoid saying things like “you know”
Elements of Persuasion: • Pitch – refers to the highs and lows of the voice. • Avoid a monotone.
Elements of Persuasion: • Speed • About 140 – 160 words per minute is the normal pace for debating • Avoid speaking too fast
Elements of Persuasion: • Pause – the pause is a critical tool. • Use pauses to emphasize a certain word. • Pause before and after a word for special emphasis.
Elements of Persuasion: • Volume – use with caution. • Don’t scream but projecting your voice to the back of the room can be very effective.
Elements of Persuasion: • Variance means changing pitch, volume and speed. • Never go more than one paragraph without vocal variance.
Strategy • Appear truthful • Appear committed to your side of the debate • Portray yourself as an authority on the topic • Don’t be afraid to show emotion
