Objectives Students will discuss the power words and pictures have on society. They will be able to discuss the advertisements from WWII and know the audiences and how they affected the war effort. They will also look at the difference between WWII ads and ads for today’s military.
The Power of Words: WWII Advertisement and Advertising Today
Pick which time period you want to learn about first WWII Army Ad from today
Ad #1 This advertisement is directed towards women during WWII. When medical care was needed for wounded soldiers, these ads called out to women to play their part in the war effort by becoming nurses.
Ad #2 This advertisement was to get people to buy war bonds. War bonds were money loaned to the government to help pay for the war. The picture in this ad is focused on the people at home who thought that they had it rough, but in reality had it good compared to the woman in the picture.
Ad #3 The man in this advertisements name was Uncle Sam. He was used as a figure of authority. The ads with his picture on it were supposed to inspire a feeling of being needed.
Ad #4 The woman in this ad was called Rosie the Riveter. She was used to make woman feel like they needed to do their part to help the war. Her strength inspired woman to do the factory jobs on the home-front that needed filled since the men were gone off to fight.
Ad #5 This is an advertisement inviting women to join the marines. It’s audience were adventurous women who did not want to stay on the home-front during the war.
Ad #1 This advertisement is for the United States Army. It’s target audience are youth who want these values and who want to be admired and respected for the person that they are.
Ad #2 This advertisement is joining the Army National Guard. It’s target audience are youth who want a college education but do not have the money for it. This is a popular form of recruitment today. Forms of the Military use paying for a college education as a form of appeal for joining.
Ad #3 This is an advertisement for the Marines. The motto on it says “The Few, The Proud.” These words are used to entice the reader. They go along with the picture showing strong, respectable people who are revered.
Ad #4 This an advertisement supporting the war on terror. The brutal picture is a reminder of what happened to our country. The words combined with the picture are used to inspire anger in it’s target audience.
Ad #5 This is an advertisement for ending the war. The tombstones are used to show the cost of wars is not only in dollars, but in lives. It’s pictures and words inspire sadness in it’s audience.
