About Dumfries & Galloway • Third largest region in Scotland, covering 2,380 square miles stretching from Langholm in the east to Stranraer in the West (112 miles) and from Ayrshire in the North to the Solway Coast in the South (30+ miles) • It is only the 12th largest in terms of populationwith an estimated population of 148,060 - around 60 people a square mile. Scottish average is 168 • The biggest town is Dumfries with an estimated population of 31,630, followed by Stranraer with an estimated population of 10,290 and Annan with 8,430 people. • Most people (almost 100,000) live in small communities < 4,000 or in the countryside.
Mental Health Services • Midpark Hospital - 85 beds: 34 Adult Acute beds in two wards 6 Psychiatric Intensive Care beds (IPCU) 15 Acute beds for older adults with functional mental illness (FMI) 16 Acute beds for adults with dementia or an organic illness 14 beds for rehabilitation. • Community – 8 Community Mental Health Teams : 5 adult, 4 OA Community Rehab Team Huntingdon Day Hospital Crisis Assessment & Treatment Service + Forensic Service, BPD Team, CAMHS, Learning Disability Service, Psychology
CATS TeamCrisis Assessment & Treatment Service • 9am – 9pm Mon – Fri; 11am – 6pm Sat/Sun • 365 days per year • 9.4 wte RMNs • Consultant Psychiatrist & Staff Grade • Operates across 3 of 4 districts ……Wigtownshire • 2.5 wte RMNs • 8.30am – 7pm Mon - Fri • Sector psychiatrist • Now same Team Leader
Challenges • Crisis team not 24/7 – gate keeping overnight responsibility of Duty Doc • CMHTs spread far and wide across the region • Acute Beds are in Dumfries • Travelling times for service users • Crisis service not equitable across region (yet)
