  1. Naming Ionic Compounds – Part 2 How do you name any ionic compound? cation name then anion name Possible cations or anions: 1. Representative Elements - cations are just the name of the element anions have an -ide ending

  2. Possible Cations and Anions Continued... 2. Transition Metal Ions Because many can have multiple charges, a roman numeral is used to show the charge. They are named with the name of the element followed by the charge.

  3. Possible Cations and Anions Continued... 3. Polyatomic Ions Their charge acts on the whole group of atoms Names are something you must memorize

  4. A word about subscripts and superscripts charges Superscripts are used to show: for transition ions, they dictate the roman numeral used Subscripts show the number of that atom or ion in the compound

  5. Examples Write the name and chemical formula of the resulting compounds. Cr2+ and NO3- You can name the compound without knowing the chemical formula because all you need is: the names of the ions! Cr(NO3)2 Chromium (II) Nitrate

  6. Write the name and chemical formula of the resulting compounds Al2(CO3)3 aluminum carbonate FeSiO3 iron(II) silicate Ca3(PO3)2 calcium phosphite Co2O3 cobalt(III) oxide Pb2HPO4 lead(IV) hydrogen phosphate Al3+ and CO32- Fe2+ and SiO32- Ca2+ and PO33- Co3+ and O2- Pb4+ and HPO42-

  7. Name based on chemical formulas Copper(II) Sulfide Cu2S Cr2O3 MnF2 Ba(CN)2 Mg(ClO4)2 Chromium(III) Oxide Manganese(II) Fluoride Barium Cyanide Magnesium Perchlorate
