Operation Torch – North Africa • September of 1942 the German Army was at Stalingrad and Gen. Rommel was at the gates of Egypt with his touted Afrika Korps. The Allies desperately needed a second front to reverse the eastern assault of the Axis armies. Operation Torch was devised to be that second front. • The plan was to force Axis troops to divide their army. • The Players: • Axis Power: Afrika Korps German General Rommel • Allied Powers: British General Alexander and American General Dwight D. Eisenhower
The Italian Campaign of WWII • The Allied operations in and around Italy, from 1943 to the end of the war. • Joint Allied Forces were responsible for all Allied land forces in the Mediterranean theatre, and it planned and commanded the first attack, the invasion of Sicily, and the campaign on the Italian mainland. • The name Mediterranean Theatre of World War II encompasses naval, land and air campaigns involving Allied and Axis forces on the Mediterranean Sea and the countries which surround it . • After many hard fought battles there were 25,000 Allied and 30,000 Axis casualties.
Mussolini’s Fate • The Great Council on Fascism met after their defeat in Sicily and agreed on a vote of no confidence in their dictator. • King Victor Emmanuel III forced the dictator to resign, stripped him of his power and arrested him. • On April 27th 1945, Italian guerillas captured Mussolini and executed him.
The Tuskegee Airmen • The First all black air combat unit to serve in the US Military • Two Distinguished Unit Citations during WWII for their outstanding aerial combat against the German Luftwaffe.
442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team “Go For Broke” • 21 Medal’s of Honor • 9,486 Purple Hearts • 4,000 Bronze Stars just to name a few. • The 442nd was made up of mostly Japanese Americans from the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland US. • One of the most decorated units in the history of the US Military.
