  1. CDV – Research Project WHOA! RESEARCH!!!

  2. So…Why do we have to do this? Why does research matter? • WHY?! Because it is AWESOME. • Also, you will be asked to research A LOT of topics/ideas/theories in college and then showcase that information in some way. • I’m not going to college…so can I skip this? NO – when you are working, your boss will ask you to find out what would be the best way to display their product or how to organize their finances in a more effective way…that will all require RESEARCH! • And if you’re just going to be a rock star or something, you need research to find someone to run your fan club.

  3. You just learned research is cool?! • Well…you’re a little • BUT – NO FEAR… MS. C is HERE! • Research is just gathering creditable information that inform an audience about a specific topic.

  4. …but what topic?! • This is the easy part – find a topic you find interesting! Not just interesting but something that pulls at your heart strings! Something you feel has meaning to it! • Find something that you believe we can help fix! What social change would you like to see? • Social Change: refers to any significant change over time in behavior patterns and cultural values and norms. (If you are not sure what a norm is, take a moment and Google it) 

  5. Right now… • One your sheet you have been provided with…Fill in the topic you will be researching. • If you don’t know what topic you would like to focus on, write down your top three. • Remember – pick something you would like to read about. • After you have filled out what topic you would like to research – complete questions #1-2

  6. Look at the list of questions ON MY WEBSITE under the link to these notes… • Your job is to write a question about your topic. We call this a research question. • Think about it as a way to focus your audience on what you will be talking about and analyzing. • On this list there are pre-written questions. Some of them may work for your topic or you may have to create your own. • If you are struggling to write your own, don’t give up and just pick something else because you won’t be interested in your topic!

  7. Once you have reviewed the list of possible questions… • Write three (3) possible questions of your own about your topic. • You want to pick something that will provide information to your audience • Remember – YOU ARE NOT CHOOSING A SIDE. • Mostly, you are not researching to prove a point. • This can be confusing. I will be talking class time to explain this more.

  8. What will your project look like… • Your project will NOT BE A RESEARCH PAPER. • Your project will be a class presentation. You will make a display for your fellow students to see and you will verbally deliver the information you have learned. • You will also be making some sort of program/charity/idea to help your social problem/issue out.

  9. What will be in your project… • Your project will be divided into 3 topics. • Historical Background: How did this problem or issue start? • Current Situation: What is the current status? Discuss both sides, new laws/problems, etc. • Social Relevance: Basically, why should we care? What should/could we do about it? Who is currently helping? How does our CDV tie into this topic? • The Social Relevance section will also be where you pitch your idea of how to help a social change with this issue.

  10. Now… • Go back to your worksheet and fill out the three sections the BEST to your ability. Use only what you knew BEFORE researching your topic and what you have found SO FAR. • When you have completed this form – turn it into Ms. Carpani. • COMPLETE THE SUVREY UNDER THE LINK TO THESE NOTES ON MY WEBSITE!

  11. Check out some cool stuff people are doing around the world… • Check out a few minutes of this video about a 14 year old who wanted to make a difference. • This is not about a topic you could research…but just to get your mind thinking about ways people are helping out! • http://vimeo.com/89424566
