Dealing with different attitudes to accessibility OZeWAI 1 December 2011 • @KimChatterjee • @RuthEllison • @StamfordUX
Who are we? • Passionate | Working in the UX & Accessibility space for a combined 18 years
Does this sound familiar? • WCAG 2.0 guidelines are finally implemented in your organisation….
But… • Don’t know that it exists • Accessibility checks done right at the end • Little consideration of the overall user experience
A few fails… • Awareness of accessibility
A few fails… Culture & attitudes
The 7 attitudes • Ignorance • Apathetic • Bargaining • Denial • Educated & aware • Champion • Commitment
Ignorance lack of knowledge or information about accessibility
Apathetic not interested or concerned
Denial an assertion that something said, believed, alleged, etc., is false
Bargaining negotiating on what each party shall give and perform
Watch out for… The Troll
Watch out for… The Zealot
Educated & aware conscious of the importanceof getting it right
Watch out for… The Zealot
Commitment dedication, application
Watch out for…. The Cowboy
Champion a person who fights for or defends accessibility
In summary… Key stuff • Requires time, commitment, planning & proper execution • Need to educate, assist and support transition of attitudes from ignorance to champions • Focus on the human experience of accessibility • Engage, acknowledge and share the successes
