  5. Their Differences • Federalists were led by Hamilton and favored: • Rule by the wealthy class • Strong federal government • Emphasis on manufactured products • Loose interpretation of the constitution • British alliance • National bank • Protective tariffs

  6. Federalist supporters • Federalists were supported mostly by lawyers, merchants, manufacturers and clergy. • Why did these individuals support the Federalist party?

  7. Their Differences • Democratic-Republicans were led by Jefferson and favored: • Rule by the people • Strong state governments • Emphasis on agricultural products • Strict interpretation of the Constitution • French alliance • State banks • Free trade

  8. Democratic-Republican supporters • The Democratic-Republican party was supported by farmers and trades people. • Why do you think that these individuals would support the Democratic-Republicans instead of the Federalists?

  9. Federalists Believed that the federal government had implied powers. What are implied powers? Believed that public office should be held by “educated men of property” Democratic-Republicans Believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution. What does it mean to have a strict interpretation? Believed that “individual liberties” would be safe only if ordinary people participated in the government. Government power

  10. It’s time to vote • Every voter in the United States should be familiar with the candidates, including: • The candidates beliefs about various issues. Do you agree with them ? • Their background. Do they have what it takes to handle the affairs of our nation? • Remember that we should be educated when we make our decisions. It is our duty as Americans to make informed decisions.
