The First Political Parties Federalists Democratic-Republicans • Alexander Hamilton • Wanted a strong central government • Urged the growth of cities, trade, • industry and manufacturing • Supported the Bank of United States • Loose interpretation of the Constitution • British alliance • Thomas Jefferson • Wanted strong states government • Believed that farmers were the • backbone of the nation • Opposed the Bank of United States • Strict interpretation of the Constitution • French alliance • Called themselves “Republicans” (not the same as the Republicans today)
